First the bricks

First the bricks London City Island

Jacco van Dijk from Byldis in Veldhoven knew that he had a good concept for prefabrication in his hands, when discussions with client of London City Island were under way. Fast construction time, fully dismantled panels to the building site: everything was perfect for this location. ‘But the client wasn’t really “all in” until I told him that we don’t use brick strips, but whole bricks’, explains Van Dijk. The fact that the bricks also had to be custom glazed was a next step in the development.

Manufactured prefab constructive facade panels

‘It’s like a story in a boy’s comic, laughs Van Dijk. Once upon a time there was a company in Veldhoven that manufactured prefab constructive facade panels and wanted to conquer the English market. Van Dijk set out with a modest portfolio of projects to “land” the first towers of the LCI project within two years. ‘Developers in London are short on time and the traditional builders do not have enough capacity’, says the CEO of Byldis. He was in the right place at the right time. ‘Our construction method enables these buildings to be completed in just over half the time a traditional building process takes. We deliver the constructive elements complete: including frames, windows and an outer facade.’ Everything is manufactured in Veldhoven and shipped to the British capital. This was the procedure for ten LCI buildings. Byldis is also building at other locations in London, such as Royal Wharf. ‘Yes, it’s really impressive’, says van Dijk. ‘This project has taught us a great deal: we have delivered on our promise and have never missed a single deadline.’

Streamlined process

A great deal of research and development preceded the construction in order to ensure that the facade panels comply with the English legislation and regulations. ‘Virtually the entire company has taken a technical English course’, explains Van Dijk. ‘The technical terms are a bit different to the English you use on holiday.’ Byldis was responsible for the engineering, production and assembly of the towers from the first construction layer or stages, which were built in situ. ‘An English size has been used for the bricks. We collaborated intensively with Wienerberger from the outset and the supply of bricks has run perfectly. They understand our system and we have insight into their production process.’

When the client and architect suggested the idea for glazed bricks, the development team and Wienerberger joined forces again. Van Dijk: ‘You can’t cut or glue glazed bricks, so you have to modify your approach. You start first by outlining the stones before you start with the construction. In the production process you take measures to ensure that the bricks do not become damaged.’ The builder does not want to reveal exactly what these measures are. He smiles: ‘There is a secret behind it and we want to keep it that way.’

Henderson: 'If you really want red, then glazed brick is the only option.
The client understood that as well. Which resulted in red, as well as blue and purplish blue glaze.
And whatever colour the sky in London is: the buildings continue to gleam.'
